5 Signs Your Car Battery Is About to Die

5 Signs Your Car Battery Is About to Die Maintenance

A dead battery is one of the most common reasons drivers call for roadside help — and it's also one of the most preventable. Watch for these warning signs and you can replace the battery on your schedule, not the battery's.

1. Slow engine crank

If your engine turns over slowly or sounds sluggish when you start it, the battery is struggling to deliver enough power. This is often the very first warning.

2. Dim lights and electrical glitches

Headlights that look dim at idle but brighten when you rev the engine, flickering dashboard lights, or power windows moving slowly all point to a weak battery or charging system.

3. Clicking when you turn the key

A rapid clicking sound with no crank usually means the battery doesn't have enough power left to engage the starter.

4. The battery warning light

If the battery-shaped light on your dash comes on, don't ignore it. It can mean the battery, alternator or charging system needs attention.

5. Age — over three to five years

In Hawaii's heat, batteries often last three to five years. If yours is in that range and showing any of the signs above, have it tested.
